Author, Jasmine Young Natural hair among the African American community has been on the rise for the past few years. Women are loving their tight coils and curly fros as opposed to going for the straightened look in 2017. Check out some of these tips adapted from Cosmopolitan on how to maintain your amazing natural hair!
1. Hydrate your hair! I know many of us tend to hair dry hair that needs a lot of moisture and when I say a lot... I mean ALOT. Natural hair needs a lot of moisture to remain healthy and strong. And if you've colored your hair like I have, that means to you need to make sure to deep condition often and make sure the color does not damage the hair. Carol's daughter is one of my favorite brands and they have so many moisturizers for different type of hair. http://www.carolsdaughter.com/hair-products/product-type/hair-moisturizers. My favorite is the Black Vanilla for dry, dull, or brittle hair. 2. Be careful with protective styles Protective styles are meant to be....well protective. Although, they're only protective if we continue to protect our hair as well. Far too often people choose a protective style and feel they need to do nothing with their hair (trust me I was one of those people) but while protective styles require less work, they still require some work. When wearing protective styles, whether they are braids, twists or weaves it is important to remember there is hair underneath and to still take care of your natural hair. Moisture your scalp daily and remember to always wear a silk scarf at night to protect your hair. 3. Trim, trim, trim Now, when some people hear the word trim they fear because they think their stylist will cut all their hair off. All trims do is keep your hair healthy; they take off the damaged, lifeless hair which actually helps your hair to grow longer, faster. You should get trims frequently, personally I've always tried to stay on a 2 week schedule although sometimes that gets thrown off. Everyone's hair is different and you should always know what's on your head and learn the best ways to manage it.
